Four DMC Teachers Receive Governor's STEM Scale-Up Program Awards

Four DMC teachers were awarded the STEM Scale-Up Program Award on Friday, April 8, 2022.  This initiative was started by Governor Reynolds in 2012 as an effort to increase STEM education in PreK-12 schools across Iowa.  Each award comes with access to a program, materials, and professional development for the educator receiving the award. 

Congratulations to:

Ben De Ford (MS Science) 

  • STEM Scale-Up Program Award, Soapy Cilantro: A Hands-On Introduction to Genomics
  • STEM Scale-Up Program Award, Project GUTS (Growing Up Thinking Scientifically)
  • STEM Scale-Up Program Award, Ioponics (a program with aquaponics)

Renee McGill (MS Social Studies)

  • STEM Scale-Up Program Award, Robot Investigations with Finch Robot

Scott Nilius (HS Science)

  • STEM Scale-Up Program Award, Soapy Cilantro: A Hands-On Introduction to Genomics

Liz Sisler (Elementary STEAM)

  • STEM Scale-Up Program Award, Computational Thinking in Action with Micro:bit 

DMC Senior Academic Director Jahna Duda said, "Des Moines Christian is blessed to be recipients of the 2022 STEM Scale Up Grants. We remain grateful to the state's commitment to programming focused on enhancing the student experience related to science, engineering, technology, and math.  With more and more DMC graduates choosing STEM related fields, we know the programs awarded to our teachers will provide valuable learning experiences that help shape a student's passion and calling into the field."

Through legislative appropriation, the Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council is able to offer exemplary STEM programs throughout the state. The STEM Scale-Up Program has demonstrated success in increasing student interest and achievement in STEM across all demographics.
