DMC Alumna Named CFO of the Year

Congratulations to DMC alumna Karla Jones-Weber ('91) for her recognition as the Des Moines Business Record’s Deloitte CFO of the Year. The award recognizes Karla’s significant achievement and success within her profession and organization. The award is also given based on personal and professional reputation, to an individual showing high ethical standards.

Karla is Chief Financial and Administrative Officer at the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines. The Community Foundation improves quality of life for all by promoting charitable giving, connecting donors with causes they care about and providing leadership on important community issues. Karla joined the organization in 2001, was promoted to CFO in 2012, and has guided the organization through significant growth.

Karla says, “At DMC I had the opportunity to be involved in a variety of activities from sports to student council. All of these activities taught me leadership and teamwork which are skills I use daily. DMC also set very high standards which helped me to realize I was capable of more than I believed.”

Karla and her husband Martie have seven children. Their youngest two, Talia ('26) and Priya ('28), are currently enrolled at DMC.

“I hope that our kids are learning that our faith is our foundation in life, but that we are called to serve everyone. We need to go beyond our walls/homes/churches to be Jesus to those around us. There are many times in business settings that I can’t speak openly about my faith, but I try to allow my character and integrity to speak volumes.  I haven’t always gotten it right, but I’ve never stopped trying,” Karla says.

Karla encourages today’s students who are considering careers, to think about accounting differently. She says many different options are available in the accounting field. “Individuals can be a nonprofit or business leader through financial storytelling,” she says.
